Impression of a Rijksmuseum Tower

May, 2025

This atmospheric urban sketch features one of the distinctive side towers of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The monumental structure is rendered in warm, ocher-yellow tones, detailed with horizontal bands and tall, arched windows spanning three floors. The focus is on the tower's characteristic, steep mansard roof, painted in a contrasting dark gray wash and complete with detailed dormer windows and a decorative cresting with pointed finials. The surroundings are captured with loose, expressive ink lines. Stylized green trees flank the tower, framing the architecture beautifully. In the foreground, the bustling energy around the museum is captured through the suggestion of a quay, a bridge railing, and passing figures, reflecting the quintessential Amsterdam atmosphere. The sky is subtly enhanced with a soft, transparent blue wash, giving the entire piece a fresh and airy feel.
